B. Professional Skills and Organizational Management

As a professional, certain skills are imperative to be successful in the field of higher education. Skills are distinct from knowledge, in that they imply the ability to take action and to perform at a high level of proficiency within the profession. In student affairs and higher education, the ability to lead and manage a team, communicate across disciplinary lines, understand and utilize resources efficiently (both monetary and human), and cultivate adaptability to successfully navigate the changing and shifting higher education landscape are essential components of a professional’s wheelhouse.

In the following reflections, I will illustrate how I have grown to understand and develop my own professional skills in relation to higher education. However, many of these skills are transferrable to other industries and professions, in that they emphasize abilities that most organizations require in order to navigate a workplace with diverse constituencies and employees and become an effective leader within that organization. Therefore, the skills and abilities I have acquired through the CSSA program will serve me in the future whether I continue in higher education or transition to another industry at some point in the future. I am truly grateful for the opportunity that the CSSA program provided for me to hone these skills and develop a deep understanding of myself as a leader and a team member.
